WHAT IS THE BRITISH EMPIRE?

The British Empire is the world of Soul of the Beast, and the greatest empire on earth in its day . Below are excerpts from an online article about the empire from New World Encyclopedia. Click the link to read the full article.

SOB_Indian_Army_1917

The British Empire is the most extensive empire in world history and for a time was the foremost global power. …By 1921, the British Empire ruled a population of [approximately 500] million people… one-quarter of the world’s population. It covered about 14.3 million square miles [which is], about a quarter of Earth‘s total land area. …The British Empire was… “the empire on which the sun never sets” …[because] the empire’s span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous colonies.

THE ART OF WAR by SUN TZU

THE ART OF WAR by SUN TZU , the ancient Chinese master of war, plays an important part in Awakening The Beast, second in the Beast book series. There was a recent blog about Sun Tzu. Now you can read excerpts from his book, The Art of War.

ATBchinese_battle1

All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

If [the enemy] is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he [has] superior strength, evade him.

Pretend to be weak, that [the enemy] may grow arrogant.

If [the enemy] is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them.

Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

WAGING WAR

Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.

There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare.

Bring war materials with you from home, but forage on the enemy… One cartload of the enemy’s provisions is equivalent to twenty of one’s own.

In chariot fighting, when ten or more chariots have been taken, our own flags should be substituted for those of the enemy, and the chariots mingled and used in conjunction with ours. The captured soldiers should be [treated] kindly… This is called, using the conquered foe to augment one’s own strength.

WHAT IS A CAMEL?

The camel plays an important role in Awakening the Beast.  They are unique animals that can survive  in the extreme heat of the desert for long periods of time without water. Below are excerpts from Wikipedia on the subject:

Dromedary camel

Dromedary camel

Camels are [a hooved animal with] distinctive fatty deposits [on their backs] known as “humps”. [There are two types-] the dromedary, or one-humped camel …of  the Middle East and … Africa; and the bactrian, or two-humped camel … [of] Central Asia. Both species have been domesticated; they provide milk, meat, [and hair for cloth]. [They] are working animals with tasks ranging from human transport to bearing loads.

The term “camel” is derived [from a] Hebrew [word [meaning] going without… This refers to [the animal’s] ability to go without food or water …

Interesting story about Sun Tzu

… Before hiring Sun Tzu, the King … tested Sun Tzu’s skills by commanding him to train a harem of 180 concubines into soldiers. Sun Tzu divided them into two companies, appointing the two concubines most favored by the king as the company commanders. When Sun Tzu first ordered the concubines to face right, they giggled …Sun Tzu … reiterated the command, and again the concubines giggled. Sun Tzu then ordered the execution of the king’s two favored concubines.…After both concubines were killed, new officers were chosen to replace them. Was Calcutta Poverty Really That Bad?

WAS CALCUTTA POVERTY REALLY THAT BAD?

The main characters in Soul of the Beast travel to Calcutta, India and experience the extreme poverty that still exists today. When someone says  the poor of America are rich compared with Calcutta, Americans often scoff.  But Mother Theresa knew this was true and spent her life giving comfort to the poor of Calcutta. Below are excerpts from an online article on the subject by Backpacking Tips Asia:

India is an amazing country to travel in …But unfortunately, the poverty [ in India is overwhelming.] Poverty can roughly be divided into absolute poverty, [what we see in India] or relative poverty [what we see in the United States].

calcutta5Absolute poverty is what you see on television … when they show skinny children from… Africa…the absolute poverty line is $1.25 per day.In other words, if a person is living on $1.25 or less per day, that person is living in absolute poverty. Continue reading

The Arabian Horse

The Arabian horse plays a prominent part in Awakening the Beast. Below are excerpts from Wikipedia…The Arabian horse … is a breed of horse that originated on the Arabian Peninsula. With a distinctive head shape and high tail carriage, the Arabian is one of the most easily recognizable horse breeds in the world. It is also one of the oldest breeds… dating back 4,500 years. Throughout history, Arabian horses have spread around the world [through] both war and trade, [and were] used to improve other breeds by adding speed, refinement, endurance, and strong bones. Today, Arabian bloodlines are found in almost every modern breed of riding horse. Continue reading

SLAVERY

In Soul of the Beast, John and his mates are captured and taken somewhere to be sold as slaves. What is a slave?

The usual concept of a slave is someone who is owned by another person, much like a horse or a dog. The slave has no rights and must do anything the slave owner tells him or her to do. The owner can punish the slave as often and as severely as he or she chooses.  The owner can kill the slave for any and no reason. Using this definition, many people throughout history were in fact slaves even though they were called something else:
