Is Climbing Mount Everest Dangerous?

Himalayan Climb

Climbing Mount Everest is extremely dangerous. Jon Krakauer wrote “Into Thin Air”, a true life account of his disastrous climb to the top of Mt. Everest. What he experienced was beyond dangerous. Below are exerpts from his book that speak for themselves.

…a boulder the size of a small television came rocketing down from the cliffs above and smashed Andy Harris’s chest. It knocked him off his feet, slammed the wind out of him, and left him dangling from the fixed lie in a  state of shock for several minutes. Had he not been clipped in with a jumar he would have certainly fallen to his death.

Chen Yu-Nan…crawled out of his tent to evacuate his bowels shod only in smooth-soled liners of his mountaineering boots- a serious lapse of judgment. As he squatted, he lost his footing on the ice and went hurtling down the Lhotse Face. Incredibly, after falling only 70 feet he plunged headfirst in a crevasse, which arrested his tumble. Sherpas who had seen the incident lowered a rope, quickly pulled him out of the slot…(the) radio crackled to life: it was Jangbu reporting in a panicked voice that Chen had stopped breathing.everest8 Continue reading

HOW OLD IS IT REALLY?

The age of old things is  most often taught as fact. What teachers and scientists don’t tell us (and often don’t know) is the techniques used to determine the age of old things are often based on assumptions [educated guesses] and can be wrong. Below are some examples of how old things are dated and how the dating can be wrong.

Volcanoes

Volcanoes are among the most amazing natural events on earth. They play a large part in Awakening of the Beast, the sequel in the Beast series. To make volcanoes come alive,  I’ve put together a photo essay on volcanic eruptions. Double-click the pictures to expand them.

ATB Greek Fire 10

The Lost Secret Of Greek Fire

Greek Fire plays an important part in Awakening The Beast.  It was such a devastating weapon that the recipe was a closely guarded secret. Actually, the secret was so well kept that the formula was lost and never rediscovered. Below is an excerpt from an online article about Greek Fire from www.lordsandladies.org/.

ATB Greek Fire12…There are several possible] formulas for creating Greek Fire. Some accounts suggest that petroleum and oil were used as an ingredient. Other … formulas which seems far more likely include a combination… of ingredients such as Quicklime, Saltpeter, Bitumen, Sulphur, Resin and Pitch. … This terrifying fiery substance stuck like glue to almost any surface and was nearly impossible to extinguish except with sand, salt, or urine. Throwing water alone on Greek Fire only fanned the flames. The history of Greek Fire [dates] back to the 7th century and was first used against the Arabs at their siege of Constantinople of 673. [Greek Fire was used in land and sea battles against the Arabs with devastating results.] Continue reading

WRITING A (good) NOVEL!

Dragon eyeThese writing tips are from an unusual source; a guy who studied nothing but science in college and never had an English or writing course (other than the mandatory Freshman English). I also never seriously wrote anything until I was in my 30’s. I have written four novels, and one of them, Soul of the Beast, has been published by both Clemson University Digital Press and Amazon.com.

Now on to my TIPS…

Have a story worth telling.

Write what you want to write.

Write about what you know. If you don’t know something, you can learn about it. (i.e.-Google it) Continue reading

QUOTES FROM AWAKENING THE BEAST

QUOTES FROM AWAKENING THE BEAST

Awakening the Beast, the sequel to Soul of the Beast, has been completed. It answers all the unanswered questions in the first book. Awakening the Beast is currently being prepared for publishing on Amazon.com. Below are quotes from the book and a taste of what the book offers.

th

I will take your hearts. Then you will watch as I offer your gifts to my god.

Fool, you say the words, but you do not understand.

It was like a monster engulfing the ship.

We cannot wait …We must save ourselves.

When there’s only one choice, you choose it.

I cannot explain what I do not understand.

The blackened trees were like tortured souls in frozen agony.ATBArabian-Horse

In the desert, to share water is to share life.

That was never my destiny.

Like a sea of locusts, they devour everything in their path.

What is the British Empire?

WHAT IS THE BRITISH EMPIRE?

The British Empire is the world of Soul of the Beast, and the greatest empire on earth in its day . Below are excerpts from an online article about the empire from New World Encyclopedia. Click the link to read the full article.

SOB_Indian_Army_1917

The British Empire is the most extensive empire in world history and for a time was the foremost global power. …By 1921, the British Empire ruled a population of [approximately 500] million people… one-quarter of the world’s population. It covered about 14.3 million square miles [which is], about a quarter of Earth‘s total land area. …The British Empire was… “the empire on which the sun never sets” …[because] the empire’s span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous colonies.

THE ART OF WAR by SUN TZU

THE ART OF WAR by SUN TZU , the ancient Chinese master of war, plays an important part in Awakening The Beast, second in the Beast book series. There was a recent blog about Sun Tzu. Now you can read excerpts from his book, The Art of War.

ATBchinese_battle1

All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

If [the enemy] is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he [has] superior strength, evade him.

Pretend to be weak, that [the enemy] may grow arrogant.

If [the enemy] is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them.

Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.

WAGING WAR

Though we have heard of stupid haste in war, cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.

There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare.

Bring war materials with you from home, but forage on the enemy… One cartload of the enemy’s provisions is equivalent to twenty of one’s own.

In chariot fighting, when ten or more chariots have been taken, our own flags should be substituted for those of the enemy, and the chariots mingled and used in conjunction with ours. The captured soldiers should be [treated] kindly… This is called, using the conquered foe to augment one’s own strength.

WHAT IS A CAMEL?

The camel plays an important role in Awakening the Beast.  They are unique animals that can survive  in the extreme heat of the desert for long periods of time without water. Below are excerpts from Wikipedia on the subject:

Dromedary camel

Dromedary camel

Camels are [a hooved animal with] distinctive fatty deposits [on their backs] known as “humps”. [There are two types-] the dromedary, or one-humped camel …of  the Middle East and … Africa; and the bactrian, or two-humped camel … [of] Central Asia. Both species have been domesticated; they provide milk, meat, [and hair for cloth]. [They] are working animals with tasks ranging from human transport to bearing loads.

The term “camel” is derived [from a] Hebrew [word [meaning] going without… This refers to [the animal’s] ability to go without food or water …
