What is Archeology?

What is Archeology?

Archeology is the study of ancient cultures and people. Below are excerpts  from Wikipedia.

Archeology… is the recovery and [study of what ancient cultures left behind. This includes bones, pieces of pottery, statues, figurines, buildings, pictures.] Archeology studies human prehistory and history from the development of the first stone tools… 4 million years ago up until recent decades.

 First excavations

SOBstonehengeOne of the first sites to undergo archeological excavation, was Stonehenge and other megalithic (big stone) monuments in England….

Excavations were also carried out in the ancient towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, both of which had been covered by ashes during the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. …[the towns were complete with] utensils… human shapes, and ancient frescos, (wall paintings)…

Development of the archeological method

William Flinders Petrie… was the first to scientifically investigate the Great Pyramid in Egypt  … Petrie developed the system of dating layers based on pottery and ceramic findings…[and trained] a whole generation of Egyptologists, including Howard Carter who went on to [discover] the tomb of… pharaoh Tutankhamun

The first… excavation to reach wide popularity [was the discovery] of ancient Troy…by Heinrich Schliemann…Archaeology became a professional activity in the first half of the 20th century [when it became] possible to study archaeology as a subject in universities … By the end of the 20th century nearly all professional archaeologists, at least in developed countries, were graduates.

Was Calcutta Poverty Really That Bad?

WAS CALCUTTA POVERTY REALLY THAT BAD?

The main characters in Soul of the Beast travel to Calcutta, India and experience the extreme poverty that still exists today. When someone says  the poor of America are rich compared with Calcutta, Americans often scoff.  But Mother Theresa knew this was true and spent her life giving comfort to the poor of Calcutta. Below are excerpts from an online article on the subject by Backpacking Tips Asia:

India is an amazing country to travel in …But unfortunately, the poverty [ in India is overwhelming.] Poverty can roughly be divided into absolute poverty, [what we see in India] or relative poverty [what we see in the United States].

calcutta5Absolute poverty is what you see on television … when they show skinny children from… Africa…the absolute poverty line is $1.25 per day.In other words, if a person is living on $1.25 or less per day, that person is living in absolute poverty. Continue reading

Background: John Sexton, His Curse, His Mates

SOB Aristocrat boys

John Sexton is a central character of Soul of the Beast and the person who tells the story. He was born into an aristocratic British family and grew up with all the benefits of wealth and social status. His life was perfect until the Curse began.

The Curse. One by one, the adult men of the Sexton family die mysteriously. After the last Sexton adult man dies, the sons die on the first day of their eighteenth year.  John Sexton is the next to turn eighteen. With his doom just months away, John attempts to escape his fate by sailing to South Africa and hiding among the gold fields.sob-goldmines

David is John’s mate and the son of a poor South African farmer. He has a claim in the gold fields near John’s. When miners attempt to kill John, David fights them off and saves John’s life. The two become mates and work their claims together. When John sails to Australia, David goes along to protect him.  sob-thuggees

Mick Kelly is another of John’s mates. He is the son of an Irish convict sentenced to ten years of forced labor in Australia.  Mick’s mother and father both die, and he is forced to live on the streets of Derby. Mick teaches himself to read and, with his street smarts, becomes a reporter for the local newspaper. Mick says, “A good reporter knows where the bodies are buried.”

How Long Can We Survive Without Sleep?

The main characters in Soul Of The Beast  and Awakening The Beast, are forced to go without sleep for days.   Below are excerpts from the website SLEEPIO

[How long can we survive without sleep? We don't actually know. What we do know is sleep, like breathing] is a fundamental human requirement. It has even been said that one could survive for three times as long without food as one could without sleep. [One animal experiment] found that depriving rats entirely of sleep resulted in their death, or near-dying state, within 11-32 days…

Is Climbing Mount Everest Dangerous?

Himalayan Climb

Climbing Mount Everest is extremely dangerous. Jon Krakauer wrote “Into Thin Air”, a true life account of his disastrous climb to the top of Mt. Everest. What he experienced was beyond dangerous. Below are exerpts from his book that speak for themselves.

…a boulder the size of a small television came rocketing down from the cliffs above and smashed Andy Harris’s chest. It knocked him off his feet, slammed the wind out of him, and left him dangling from the fixed lie in a  state of shock for several minutes. Had he not been clipped in with a jumar he would have certainly fallen to his death.

Chen Yu-Nan…crawled out of his tent to evacuate his bowels shod only in smooth-soled liners of his mountaineering boots- a serious lapse of judgment. As he squatted, he lost his footing on the ice and went hurtling down the Lhotse Face. Incredibly, after falling only 70 feet he plunged headfirst in a crevasse, which arrested his tumble. Sherpas who had seen the incident lowered a rope, quickly pulled him out of the slot…(the) radio crackled to life: it was Jangbu reporting in a panicked voice that Chen had stopped breathing.everest8 Continue reading

Can Monks Really Disappear?

tibetan-monk1When a monk in Soul Of The Beast disappears, he blocks people from seeing him through mind control.

Mind control is part of our lives everyday and so common that we accept it as normal. Our minds are controlled through advertising, propaganda, movies, television, radio, stirring speeches, bad news, good news, what we’re taught in school, and even gossip from a neighbor.

WHY I WROTE SOUL OF THE BEAST

phelan_300x455

The Soul of the Beast there is an ancient myth hidden in the Himalayan Mountains. For centuries, men have searched for the Soul believing that it will give them powers and eternal life to its possessor. John Sexton’s grandfather finds the key to finding the Soul. He gives the key to John to keep it from an assassin cult. The assassins murder the grandfather and pursue John and his mates to kill them and take the key and the Soul’s powers for themselves. John and his mates are in a race for their lives that takes them across continents. Neither John nor the assassins realize their every move is controlled and part of a war between unseen forces.

I wrote SOUL OF THE BEAST because of the high numbers of teens, and adults, who can’t read or read poorly. That has always bothered me. Then came the day when I walked through the Young Adult section of a bookstore. The main shelves were filled with comics in paperback form with meaningless stories and quick art meant for mass production.  Solid fiction like Treasure Island, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter was relegated to side shelves where it was harder to see and find.
horse3 That’s when I decided to write an adventure thriller to grab the attention of poor and non readers and keep them reading.

If Soul of the Beast  is something you’re interested in reading or giving as a gift, you can buy it online in both paperback and ebook. Simply click Amazon.com .

Still not sure you’d like it? You can read the first chapter for free. Simply go to my website, wesphelan.com, Click on Soul of the Beast Excerpt . (It’s below  the main banner with the dragon at the top of the page.) Read the first ten pages. If that doesn’t capture your interest, then thanks for looking. I’m betting you’ll want more.

Pangaea: The Supercontinent

 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

SOB.pangea-continental-driftPangaea (pan-JEE) was a supercontinent that existed … approximately 300 million years ago.[2] It began to break apart around 200 million years ago.   The name Pangaea is derived from Ancient Greek [words]  pan meaning “entire”, and Gaia meaning “Mother Earth”.[4] The name was coined during a 1927 symposium discussing the theory of continental drift. A scientist named Wegener postulated that, prior to breaking up and drifting to their present locations, all the continents had at one time formed a single supercontinent. Originally, this theory was rejected because it was thought that nothing could move a landmass as large as a continent. We now know that continents do move. [The movement] is called continental drift or tectonic plate movementThe break-up of Pangaea continues today in the Red Sea Rift and East African Rift.

The progression from a single supercontinent to the continents of today is shown in the pictures to the left.
