Background: John Sexton, His Curse, His Mates

SOB Aristocrat boys

John Sexton is a central character of Soul of the Beast and the person who tells the story. He was born into an aristocratic British family and grew up with all the benefits of wealth and social status. His life was perfect until the Curse began.

The Curse. One by one, the adult men of the Sexton family die mysteriously. After the last Sexton adult man dies, the sons die on the first day of their eighteenth year.  John Sexton is the next to turn eighteen. With his doom just months away, John attempts to escape his fate by sailing to South Africa and hiding among the gold fields.sob-goldmines

David is John’s mate and the son of a poor South African farmer. He has a claim in the gold fields near John’s. When miners attempt to kill John, David fights them off and saves John’s life. The two become mates and work their claims together. When John sails to Australia, David goes along to protect him.  sob-thuggees

Mick Kelly is another of John’s mates. He is the son of an Irish convict sentenced to ten years of forced labor in Australia.  Mick’s mother and father both die, and he is forced to live on the streets of Derby. Mick teaches himself to read and, with his street smarts, becomes a reporter for the local newspaper. Mick says, “A good reporter knows where the bodies are buried.”

What Is A Jackal?

The Jackal plays an important part in Awakening The Beast. However, the animals in the story are fiction. Real jackals are much smaller and none of them are pure black or have blue eyes. Below are excerpts from Wikipedia about real jackals.

ATBjackal1The jackal is a small- to medium-sized …[dog-like animal. There are] three species: the black-backed jackal, the side-striped jackal of sub-Saharan Africa, and the golden jackal of northern Africa … Continue reading

Are Dragons Real?

chinese dragonAre Dragons Real?

The immediate response from most of us is NO.

st_george2Then why are Dragon myths in  cultures all around the world? There are the Chinese dragons and the English story of St. George and the Dragon. The Bible talks about a dragon in the book of Revelation.  The aborigines of Australia have a verbal history about a dragon like creature that they hunted to extinction. Native cultures in North, Central and South America have legends of dragons. The most famous example is the Aztec god, Quetzalcoatl.

Dinosaurs are dragon like creatures. Could dragon myths be a cultural memory about dinosaurs?  For people to remember dinosaurs, dinosaurs and people would have to exist at the same time. Scientists tell us that’s impossible because dinosaurs  were extinct long before man walked the earth. Dinosaurs lived up until 250 million years ago. Man has only been on the earth for 5 million years.

The experts are wrong about this, and it’s easy to prove.Because DINOSAURS ARE ALIVE TODAY.  These living dinosaurs are so familiar that we don’t recognize them for what they are. Below is a partial list of living dinosaurs with their pictures.  Look at each picture and ask yourself, could this be a living dinosaur? The answer for each is obviously yes, and the fossil record confirms it.  Continue reading

Are Thugs Real?

Thugs were very real.thuggee3 They were an Indian assassin cult. Their real name for themselves was Thuggee, but the British called them Thugs. Here is what the Encyclopedia of the Unusual and Unexplained says about Thugs:

No organized cult of killers has ever murdered as many people as the Thuggee. In the 1830s this Indian secret society strangled upward of 30,000 native people and travelers as a sacrifice to their goddess Kali…  Continue reading

Is Climbing Mount Everest Dangerous?

Himalayan Climb

Climbing Mount Everest is extremely dangerous. Jon Krakauer wrote “Into Thin Air”, a true life account of his disastrous climb to the top of Mt. Everest. What he experienced was beyond dangerous. Below are exerpts from his book that speak for themselves.

…a boulder the size of a small television came rocketing down from the cliffs above and smashed Andy Harris’s chest. It knocked him off his feet, slammed the wind out of him, and left him dangling from the fixed lie in a  state of shock for several minutes. Had he not been clipped in with a jumar he would have certainly fallen to his death.

Chen Yu-Nan…crawled out of his tent to evacuate his bowels shod only in smooth-soled liners of his mountaineering boots- a serious lapse of judgment. As he squatted, he lost his footing on the ice and went hurtling down the Lhotse Face. Incredibly, after falling only 70 feet he plunged headfirst in a crevasse, which arrested his tumble. Sherpas who had seen the incident lowered a rope, quickly pulled him out of the slot…(the) radio crackled to life: it was Jangbu reporting in a panicked voice that Chen had stopped breathing.everest8 Continue reading

ATB Greek Fire 10

The Lost Secret Of Greek Fire

Greek Fire plays an important part in Awakening The Beast.  It was such a devastating weapon that the recipe was a closely guarded secret. Actually, the secret was so well kept that the formula was lost and never rediscovered. Below is an excerpt from an online article about Greek Fire from www.lordsandladies.org/.

ATB Greek Fire12…There are several possible] formulas for creating Greek Fire. Some accounts suggest that petroleum and oil were used as an ingredient. Other … formulas which seems far more likely include a combination… of ingredients such as Quicklime, Saltpeter, Bitumen, Sulphur, Resin and Pitch. … This terrifying fiery substance stuck like glue to almost any surface and was nearly impossible to extinguish except with sand, salt, or urine. Throwing water alone on Greek Fire only fanned the flames. The history of Greek Fire [dates] back to the 7th century and was first used against the Arabs at their siege of Constantinople of 673. [Greek Fire was used in land and sea battles against the Arabs with devastating results.] Continue reading

WHY I WROTE SOUL OF THE BEAST

phelan_300x455

The Soul of the Beast there is an ancient myth hidden in the Himalayan Mountains. For centuries, men have searched for the Soul believing that it will give them powers and eternal life to its possessor. John Sexton’s grandfather finds the key to finding the Soul. He gives the key to John to keep it from an assassin cult. The assassins murder the grandfather and pursue John and his mates to kill them and take the key and the Soul’s powers for themselves. John and his mates are in a race for their lives that takes them across continents. Neither John nor the assassins realize their every move is controlled and part of a war between unseen forces.

I wrote SOUL OF THE BEAST because of the high numbers of teens, and adults, who can’t read or read poorly. That has always bothered me. Then came the day when I walked through the Young Adult section of a bookstore. The main shelves were filled with comics in paperback form with meaningless stories and quick art meant for mass production.  Solid fiction like Treasure Island, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter was relegated to side shelves where it was harder to see and find.
horse3 That’s when I decided to write an adventure thriller to grab the attention of poor and non readers and keep them reading.

If Soul of the Beast  is something you’re interested in reading or giving as a gift, you can buy it online in both paperback and ebook. Simply click Amazon.com .

Still not sure you’d like it? You can read the first chapter for free. Simply go to my website, wesphelan.com, Click on Soul of the Beast Excerpt . (It’s below  the main banner with the dragon at the top of the page.) Read the first ten pages. If that doesn’t capture your interest, then thanks for looking. I’m betting you’ll want more.

WHAT IS A CAMEL?

Camels play an important role in Awakening the Beast. Camels are unique animals that survive for  long periods of time without water in the extreme heat of the desert. Below are excerpts from Wikipedia.

Dromedary camel

Dromedary camel

Camels are [a hooved animal with] distinctive fatty deposits [on its back] known as “humps”. [There are two types of camel-] the dromedary, or one-humped camel …of  the Middle East and … Africa; and the bactrian, or two-humped camel … [of] Central Asia. Both species have been domesticated; they provide milk, meat, [and hair for cloth]. [They] are working animals with tasks ranging from human transport to bearing loads.

The term “camel” is derived [from a] Hebrew [word [meaning] going without… This refers to [the camel’s] ability to go without food or water …

Pangaea: The Supercontinent

 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

SOB.pangea-continental-driftPangaea (pan-JEE) was a supercontinent that existed … approximately 300 million years ago.[2] It began to break apart around 200 million years ago.   The name Pangaea is derived from Ancient Greek [words]  pan meaning “entire”, and Gaia meaning “Mother Earth”.[4] The name was coined during a 1927 symposium discussing the theory of continental drift. A scientist named Wegener postulated that, prior to breaking up and drifting to their present locations, all the continents had at one time formed a single supercontinent. Originally, this theory was rejected because it was thought that nothing could move a landmass as large as a continent. We now know that continents do move. [The movement] is called continental drift or tectonic plate movementThe break-up of Pangaea continues today in the Red Sea Rift and East African Rift.

The progression from a single supercontinent to the continents of today is shown in the pictures to the left.
